An example of how this helps an individual is Rwanda, where the country has made significant advances to increase the financial literacy of its population. The National Bank of Rwanda launched a bold campaign to educate citizens about financial literacy and inclusion, particularly in rural populations. The program maintained that through greater financial education around subjects including budgeting, savings, and loans, people would better be able to engage with the formal economy.

Impact of the Program

  • Higher Savings Rates: After the financial literacy campaign, a far greater percentage of Rwandans started saving money. They became savers, knowing how they could save, whether it is in a mobile savings account or in other means available to them, and their ability to grow their wealth increased.
  • Improved Access to Financial Products: Literate households are also more likely to set up an account with a formal financial institution such as a bank or insurance company. Accordingly, the number of bank accounts increased and people are using micro-loans to start small businesses.
  • Empowered Entrepreneurship: Many individuals in Rwanda, women in particular, have been able to take out small loans in this program and expand or start businesses with the money, significantly improving their financial wellbeing.

  • Cultural and Social Barriers: In certain areas, traditional beliefs and social factors can affect people's willingness to engage with financial systems or focus on financial planning.
  • Technology Gap: While digital financial services are on the rise, the digital divide between rural and urban dwellers can prevent people from having access to digital financial literacy content.

But for every obstacle, there is an opportunity. Governments and companies have the chance to expand financial literacy initiatives through the use of digital portals for wider reach, in addition to working with NGOs and education institutions.
